A Sense of Being Kind: Is it Worth It?

I have a friend who is my college sweetheart, and we’ve been friends for 26 years. Although there was a time when we had different focuses and rarely spoke, our bond has remained strong. There’s a proverb that goes, “Far from sight, close at heart,” which describes us perfectly. She is and will always be my best friend. I cherish our memories together, not just because of our connection, but because she is genuinely kind-hearted. You can tell right away that she has a kind personality; it’s obvious. While she has many other positive traits, her kindness stands out the most.

I always admire that thing from her. How can she have the ability to make a great first impression that no one can resist, that she is indeed a kind-hearted person? If you meet me, you might find me to be kind too (I hope!), but, there’s the other traits that stands out most, and that “kind side” is just left out automatically. My husband thinks I’m sometimes too kind, but I’m pretty sure I’m nothing compared to her (you notice the word “sometimes” right?). She’s built differently. I’m sure you have this kind of person as a friend; those who have a kind-hearted personality stand out the most. You’ll feel lucky to have them, isn’t it?

And then, I begin to think, why is it important for us to be kind people? We don’t need to reach my friend’s level. Just being a good and kind person it’s enough. Many book highlights this, including by Dalai Lama, which teaches that the purpose of life is to seek happiness through compassion and kindness, for ourselves and others. Kindness is not just a virtue,it’s essential for emotional health. When we are kind, we often suffer less because we focus on others instead of ourselves. The Dalai Lama also mentions that people who regularly shows kindness, empathy, and gratitude tend to live longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives. Interesting!

Let’s talk about the novel! Yay! Who hasn’t heard of “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee? This classic novel shows us the value of empathy and understanding others. Through Atticus Finch, we learns to see the world from others’ perspectives and to behave kindly, even when faced with unfairness.. He teaches his sons, Scout and Jem, one of the book’s memorable lessons:

“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”

This quote really nails what kind-heartedness is all about: empathy, patience, and the willingness to treat others, even those who are cruel, different, or unjust, treating them with respect. And why does it still matter these days? Well, this novel shows us that kindness is a mark of strength. It’s choosing to understand, to defend what’s right, and to see the good in others — even when the world doesn’t. It’s gold, right?

And then I came to this conclusion: Being a kind-hearted person isn’t just “nice to have”. It’s a powerful choice that shapes who we are and how we see the world. Remembering to be kind can change everything, creating a ripple effect. A single act of kindness can shift someone’s day or life. It spreads far beyond us, fosters deep, meaningful connections, as people remember how we make them in friendships, family, and work. Kindness also bring inner peace and strength. It’s not weakness but a powerful response that keeps us calm even in tough times. Want to show emotional maturity? Just be kind! Choosing kindness, especially when difficult, reflects control, empathy, and wisdom. It’s a quiet sign of personal growth. To be an agent of change in this chaotic world? We can start by being kind ourselves, the world needs it now more than ever. Kindness is a way to help create a better world, one moment at a time.

If I may say, being a kind-hearted person doesn’t cost as much, right? Or maybe it does sometimes? No worries. You definitely won’t regret it. In the end, it will be paid, eventually. Because it will give us and the world way more than we ever imagined.

Love,

Kirana
